"We utilized Native languages to take back indigenous space in a positive way, to honor the protectors that watched over our community during the uprising and to represent the thanks regarding the partnerships and amazing work that DIW does for the Native Community.
There is a smaller mural in the parking lot- with traditional Ojibwe floral designs and traditional Dakota/Lakota geometrical stars in the four directions colors.
The large scale mural on the side of Division of Indian Work says:
Miigwech - “Thank You” in the Ojibwe language with traditional Ojibwe floral designs.
Pidamaya - “Thank you” in the Dakota language with traditional geometrical stars.
Pinagigi - “Thank you” in the Hochunk language with Hochunk traditional designs.
We had artist representation from each language painted!
When native people speak our languages we are healing the generations of traumas that we have experienced. These languages were forcibly removed through boarding schools amongst many of our families.
This possibility project was titled: Nanaandawi (to heal). The impact was to establish visuals of Native/Indigenous identities and values seen in a mural project."
